Packers Pick up Davante Wyatt's 5th Year Option

Gute said they want to keep both Walker and Wyatt, so they would pick up their options or do some other kind of extension.
The "other extension" never made any real sense to me. It makes no sense for Walker or Wyatt to accept that, just play hard this season and get paid the next. I know we did that with Love, but to me his situation as a QB was very different from theirs.
I figured they would pick up Walker, try the "extension" BS with Wyatt but get told 'No' and then decline his option.
Wyatt looked good early last season but then sputtered out, has really not shown much else. A few flashes here and there, but also some whiffs to go with those. I would not have done this. He has the talent to make it pay off for us, but it is like the Musgrave thing I was arguing with others, you need production to say you have something in a guy. You can't live on projection forever.
Sorry, just don't agree with them here. 'Hope he proves me wrong!

If they don't exercise it and he has a breakout year, then you are negotiating against an open market. Now, if he has a breakout year, you are negotiating with the 5-year option with leverage to get an extension done. I can't imagine he will be so bad this year that we will have no use for him in 2026 and $12.6M, while nothing to sneeze at, is worth the risk if they truly still think the upside is there. I am very surprised by this, but I don't hate the move, either.

Easy decision.
Wyatt by no means a game wrecker, but looking at some of the DT contracts that been going around, $13 for an above average passing DT an easy decision, IMO. Wouldn't have got anyone as good as him on the open market for that price.

He is one of the many players that we have picked that my Eagles friend on draft night was saying that he really hoped the Eagles didn't pick. And funnily enough we did it again this year, he was saying during the Giants and Cowboys picks "I hope they take Matthew Golden because he is going to suck"
But I think he is wrong about this one. Wyatt has been decent enough. (and I think he is wrong about Golden too).

Wyatt defeats pass blocks at an ELITE rate. He finishes pass rushers like a lost clown and he doesn't do much more than get in the way on most run plays.
That's valuable for a role right now, but also speaks to a player capable of a next level.
There are plenty of instant impact guys; more now than there used to be. But there are still PLENTY of guys who take a minute to find their way. DT has always been a really good position for mid-career peaks, rather than early-career peaks.

This was pretty awesome by him on this play.

I don’t think he’s deserving of a 5th year option but I had a feeling Gutenbumst would take it. There was no way Quay was getting one for the way he’s played. Not exercising either would be an open admission to somehow having 5 picks in the top 100 and missing on all of them.
He’s 3 years into the league and was already an older prospect to begin with. He should be significantly better by now.

Look at the price and look at the contracts being signed.
$13 is barely even starter money even more at many positions.
It’s a very fair price for what he adds.
Do we all obviously wish he was as better? Duh
Did he prove worthy of that draft pick? No
Does picking up his option prove the packers still thought it was a good pick? No
On an open market is a player of his caliber at his position worth $13m? Yeah, I think so

Wyatt is already older. An additional 13m to lock him up
For 2 more seasons of his “prime” is a good deal. If he becomes so he good we can’t move on, we will pay him an astronomical number but it will be a win win for both.
He hasn’t become that yet so 13m is a good number to “wait and see” what happens with him.
If he doesn’t become a beast, we move on after 5 years of service. No worries.
It’s smart

I Do Not Hate Matt Lafleur
Pretty much how I see it. He's underwhelmed thus far but for that price tag, it's worth adding the additional year.BF004 wrote: ↑30 Apr 2025 20:31Look at the price and look at the contracts being signed.

I don't hold much faith in him making a huge leap but you never know. He's a talented athlete entering his prime years. He's a risk worth taking at $13m per.

Meh. Should have sent the message that he needs to play better. It’s Darnell Savage getting his option all over again. Shouldn’t reward mediocrity.

Your friend doesn't make any sense. If he really thinks Golden is gonna suck why WOULDN'T he want NYG or Dallas to draft him??texas wrote: ↑30 Apr 2025 15:29He is one of the many players that we have picked that my Eagles friend on draft night was saying that he really hoped the Eagles didn't pick. 'Just saw that he actually led our DTs in Sacks/TFLs last year, despite being fourth in snap count among them. Tallest midget maybe but that was better than I thought. I think I also overestimated the $$ of the 5th-year option. $13M is actually not that much, the DT market is no joke.
Also, you kind of have to do this if you want any hope of keeping a guy. Once you tell a guy "we don't believe in you" they are very unlikely to ever want to come back, even if you change their tune later. These guys are competitors, they don't forgive and forget any indignation.

It makes complete sense to 5th year option Wyatt. $12.9MM puts him at 23rd in the league at DT for average salary and in 2026 it will be even lower as more guys get new deals. Especially at the Dline...you just need bodies and there is a very strong chance Clark is not on the roster in 2026 so we will need someone with upside potential.
It also makes sense they didn't 5th year Walker as his earlier draft selection and $14.7MM 2026 price tag would put him at 7th in the league at ILB for average salary.
I am guessing they will try and get Walker for another 1 or 2 year extension at around $10MM per year

I did. What am I missing here? I would think as an Eagles fan he would want his divisional rivals to draft a player he thinks sucks.go pak go wrote: ↑01 May 2025 10:49Re-read it.Pugger wrote: ↑01 May 2025 06:50Your friend doesn't make any sense. Just a "senior moment". I get those periodically as well. LoL
