Might as well draft backups, since we can't even afford to keep all the good starters... :dunno: :rotf:

Jaire is the kind of a player that if he didn't have the skills, his cocky demeanor would look ridiculous. Now it looks justified. Love this guy. 8-) :box:

Yeah, Jaire's coming contract is why I don't think we can keep King. The secondary would just get too bloated.

I generally think that for all the superstar contracts, you need to balance it out with someone on a rookie contract playing well in the position group to make it more affordable.

Like, Bakhtiari gets a mega-deal, then we need to have a rookie-contract RT come in to replace Turner and Wagner (not necessarily immediately, but we should draft one this year). Jaire gets a mega-deal so he'll have to start opposite [2021 draft pick]. Davante Adams' co-star will probably not come from a second contract to MVS or maybe even Lazard, depending on where that price tag goes (ugh), but new blood joining the organization in the next year or two. If Jones stays, Williams goes, and Dillon is rostered for the duration.

It's not a must, and obvi we have the Smiths, but it's my general theoretical team building preference.

Don’t disagree, just shows the importance of nailing picks in the draft that aren’t the first 2 rounds. The best teams can field a great team paying big money to the stars, while quality rookie contract contributors fill out the rest of the roster.

Many teams simply don’t draft well enough to do this though. TT could for many years, tbd about Gutey.

I mean sure, but it also shows the usefulness of drafting players who are "backups" as rookies. We are now well set up to go with a rookie contract at QB2 and 1 RB spot for the next few years, which is why I don't think Dillon argues against re-signing Jones necessarily. Gary and the Smiths provide some balance. We drafted Jenkins before he was to compete with Taylor, but also play opposite new free agent acquisition Turner. We drafted a S and we signed a S.

I think we could do both Smiths because we have all rookie deals at CB. but we'll extend Jaire and bid adieu to a Smith going into next year or the year after.

What the Packers need (or any team for that matter) is more players like Alan Lazard and Robert Tonyan. UDFA's who kept believing and kept working and kept improving. Its great to hit on your high draft picks but when your UDFA WR puts up 146 yards and your UDFA TE catches all 5 targets including a TD its even better.

and grabbing other teams cheap cast offs that were badly coached or miscast in a scheme.

This reinforces what we have seen... we are not getting consistent pressure on opposing QB's. I think much of this can be attributed to missing Kenny in the line-up.

Definitely missing Kenny hurts. Without him theres just no push up the middle and QBs can step up to avoid the rush.

I think part of the problem is Pettine is terrified of getting beat over the top. This defense gives up big plays. The more you send at the QB the less you have on the backend as we all know. Not saying I agree with it but Im betting thats the logic behind it. Its hard to trust your defense in coverage when they have a history in getting beat over the top or whiffing on tackles multiple times on the same play.

vs

"We're playing bloody UDFAs at ILB, Gutey so dumb..."

Ill admit that I havent really noticed. Probably because the lack of Dline play. For the last two seasons Ive been all in on getting Clark some help next to him. That being said theyve all been pretty bad with the exception of Madibuike who hasnt played.

If Barnes can keep it up and Martin comes in and is the savior the beat writers have made him out to be we just might be set at the position for years to come. Summers just needs to get better at tackling. He is always in position to make the play. Then you have Burks who despite the hate on the guy he didnt look all that bad to me when they didnt play him on the edge. We might have a decent group here.

I am excited to have the ILB group finally have some potential. Its been far too long since weve just rolled out one guy who is pretty good but the rest is just awful.

As others have hinted at, this graph to me just shows the obvious. We are choosing not to blitz much at all, and that choice is resulting in the predictable outcome that we arent getting home to QBs very often. With Kenny, we probably could get home more without a called blitz. But with Z in the middle of the D for several plays, and resources being used to clog the middle of the line, and offenses not having to give attention to where Kenny would be...it just isnt happening as much. Makes sense to me.

From what I've seen of Martin, saw some Minnesota games last year and the highlight clips on youtube, when Martin gets on the field, he's not going to give up that spot.
He's got the speed, instincts and hard nosed style that fits in exactly what the Packers need.
